India Strongly Rejects UN Rapporteur's Label of D-Company as India-Based
· World · The Hindu, Indian Express
India has strongly rejected a UN special rapporteur's description of the gangster Dawood Ibrahim-led D-Company as an "India-based" criminal group. Speaking at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York, First Secretary Raghoo Puri flagged glaring factual inaccuracies in a report presented by Ben Saul, the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism. Mr. Puri criticized the release of reports containing factual errors without accountability, stating it undermines the credibility of the world body. He specifically pointed out a reference in the report stating that the UN Security Council listed the leader of the D-Company as India-based in 2003. India argued that reading the line in isolation paints a misleading picture of reality.
Why it matters
The diplomatic rebuttal underscores India's zero-tolerance stance on international bodies misrepresenting security and organized crime details involving designated fugitives.
