India Successfully Test-Fires First 100% Indigenous AK-203 'Sher' Rifle

· India · Times of India, Moneycontrol, Hindustan Times

India has successfully manufactured and test-fired its first 100% indigenous AK-203 'Sher' assault rifle at the Korwa ordnance facility in Amethi. The rifle, produced by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture between Delhi and Moscow, is part of the 'Make in India' initiative. Major General S K Sharma, CEO & MD of IRRPL, confirmed the milestone, noting that every component and input material was sourced from the Indian industry. The rifle underwent successful firing tests, including burst firing, with encouraging initial results. IRRPL aims to produce one AK-203 'Sher' every 100 seconds and advance the delivery timeline of approximately 6 lakh rifles to the Indian Army by almost one year.

Why it matters

This development strengthens India's defence capabilities and reduces reliance on foreign imports. The Indian Army will replace ageing INSAS rifles with over 6 lakh locally manufactured AK-203 assault rifles, enhancing operational reliability and lethality.
