India to Roll Out BS-VII Emission Standards in Three Phases Starting 2029
· Automobile · Times of India, NDTV
The Indian government has approved a three-phase rollout of BS-VII emission standards, aligned with Euro 7 norms, starting in April 2029 and concluding in April 2035. The regulations target harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter, while reducing the particulate number limit from 23 nanometres to 10 nanometres. New cars and SUVs manufactured from April 2029 will face the initial phase, followed by small delivery vans in 2030 and heavy-duty vehicles in April 2031, while two-wheeler norms will be notified later. Unlike the transition to BS-VI, the new standards will not require refinery upgrades for petrol and diesel production, though automakers must upgrade engine technologies. The road transport ministry has approved the timeline, and draft notifications are expected shortly.
Why it matters
Automakers will need to invest in advanced engine technologies to meet stricter real-world emission limits, while consumers face a transition timeline spanning six years.
