India Unveils DEPA Framework for Secure AI Training on Sensitive Data
· Technology · LiveMint, Hindustan Times
India showcased a new data-sharing framework in Bengaluru on Friday that allows companies and researchers to train artificial intelligence models on sensitive data held by hospitals, banks, and government agencies without moving the information. Developed primarily by iSPIRT and launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture for AI Training framework relies on secure computing environments known as sealed rooms. Under the system, data remains with its owner while authorised digital contracts execute operations without exposing the underlying information to anyone, including the platform operator. Stakeholders noted that consultations will precede any legal framework as the country prepares to implement the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
Why it matters
The framework offers a secure mechanism for AI development that protects citizen privacy while enabling innovation across heavily regulated sectors in India.
