India-US Trade Pact Near Final Finalisation says Rajesh Agarwal

· Business · The Hindu

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal stated in Mumbai that the trade agreement between India and the United States is more less finalised with only a few issues under discussion. He emphasised that any final deal must provide preferential market access to both nations. While India operates under Most Favoured Nation tariffs, the US uses executive tariffs, requiring a specific architecture to create necessary market differentials. This follows a period of growing bilateral trade, where Indian merchandise exports to the US grew 3% to $34.5 billion between April and July 2026-27. However, imports from the US increased by 22.42% to $22.12 billion during the same period.

Why it matters

A formal agreement could reduce India's exposure to US tariff risks and the 10% additional duties imposed under forced labour probes.
