India is considering mandatory red warning labels and school-age imagery on cough syrup bottles to prevent their use in infants and toddlers. The regulatory proposal stems from complaints that doctors have continued prescribing cough formulations to very young children despite a Directorate General of Health Services advisory issued in October 2025. The DGHS guidelines state that cough medicines are not recommended for children below five years and specifically contraindicated for infants under two. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation discussed the labelling amendments during a meeting chaired by Drugs Controller General of India on September 18, 2026. The proposed rule change under the Drugs Rules, 1945, sets the specific warning age threshold at four years.
