Indian Air Force Lands IL-76 At High-Altitude Nyoma Airbase
· India · Times of India, India Today, Hindustan Times
An Indian Air Force IL-76MD heavy-lift transport aircraft has successfully landed at the Mudh-Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh. At 13,700 feet above mean sea level, the landing is being described as the highest-altitude operation for this type of aircraft globally. The airbase is strategically significant due to its proximity to the Line of Actual Control, specifically near the Demchok sector and the south bank of the Pangong Tso. The base was inaugurated in November 2025 and is designed to handle both fighter jets and heavy transport aircraft to improve troop and supply logistics.
Why it matters
This capability significantly improves the Indian military's ability to deploy troops and supplies rapidly to sensitive border areas in eastern Ladakh.
