Indian Athletes Prepared for Shipping Container Accommodation at Aichi-Nagoya Games

· Sports · Times of India, Sportstar

India's 501 athletes and 265 officials will stay in a combination of converted shipping containers, a cruise ship, and local hotels during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games starting September 19. Sharath Kamal Achanta, India's deputy chef-de-mission, stated that athletes are already accustomed to such facilities due to prior training arrangements at Sports Authority of India campuses. While some participating nations have criticised the cramped container rooms, officials have focused on preparing the Indian contingent for the unique living conditions. Around 4,000 to 5,000 athletes will be housed on the cruise liner Costa Serena, while 2,000 will reside in containers at Garden Pier. Sharath expressed confidence in the team's performance and expects the table tennis squad to secure at least one medal.

Why it matters

The unusual accommodation arrangements at the Aichi-Nagoya Games represent a logistical challenge for international delegations, potentially impacting athlete comfort and preparation. Ensuring the Indian contingent remains focused on performance despite these conditions is a key priority for the Indian Olympic Association.
