Indian handle quoted by Netanyahu & US: How a false claim fooled the world

A fake quote posted on Aug. 5 by the Indian X account @RealBababanaras claimed Iran’s Revolutionary Guard commander Ahmad Vahidi said the country would keep developing nuclear weapons while the US and Israel retained theirs. Within hours the fabricated statement was reposted by another Indian account, then circulated by Israeli media and later shared by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump. Netanyahu repeated the remark at a Jerusalem ceremony honoring Theodor Herzl, calling Vahidi’s words a “clear declaration” that Iran would continue its nuclear program. Neither YNet nor The New York Times reports can substantiate that Vahidi ever made the statement, and the article gives no source for the original claim. The misinformation is now part of the rhetoric used by Israeli and American leaders to justify their stance toward Iran.
