Indian Railways Introduces Waterless Urinals for Loco Pilots

Indian Railways has begun rolling out waterless urinals for drivers of its 12,000-horsepower electric locomotives to address a long-standing operational challenge. Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited, a joint venture between Indian Railways and Alstom, has tested a retrofitted prototype over the past four months. The initiative follows the induction of female loco pilots, making onboard sanitation facilities essential. The Madhepura factory in Bihar, which supplied its 650th locomotive on August 15, will incorporate inbuilt urinals in future builds while retrofitting existing engines. The joint venture was originally awarded an 800-locomotive contract by March 2028 under an agreement signed in 2015.

The lack of onboard sanitation has long burdened train drivers, particularly female loco pilots operating heavy freight corridors. Integrating these facilities improves working conditions and operational efficiency across the heavy haul network.
