Indian Seafarer Recounts 43-Month Ordeal in Somali Captivity

· India · Indian Express, Times of India

Himachal Pradesh native Aman Kumar Sharma survived a 43-month ordeal after being hijacked aboard the merchant vessel MV Albedo in November 2010. The Iranian-owned, Malaysian-flagged ship was boarded by pirates 200 nautical miles off the Maldives while traveling through a high-risk piracy zone toward Kenya. Sharma endured severe torture, jungle imprisonment, a shipwreck, and a daring escape before finally returning home to Mumbai on June 9, 2014. The mixed-nationality crew had faced capture after armed pirates scaled the vessel and forced the ship toward Harardhere in Somalia. Sharma returned to India at age 23 following the multi-year captivity.
