Indian tennis ends 40-year Asian Games podium drought in Nagoya

· Sports · India Today, Times of India, Sportstar

India returned from the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games without a single tennis medal, their first medal-less campaign since 1986. Sumit Nagal, India's last hope, lost in the men's singles quarter-final to Wu Yibing of China. Earlier, five top players including India's women's singles number one Sahaja Yamalapalli were omitted from the squad following a government pruning of the contingent. AITA and the Sports Authority of India disagreed on the selection process, leaving the women's singles draw empty. The result ended a streak that had seen at least one Indian podium finish at every Asian Games edition since 1990.

Why it matters

The absence of medals exposes the sport's deep talent gap as India's golden generation retires with no clear successors emerging, threatening India's future presence in international tennis.
