IndiGo Reaches Record 67.4% Market Share Amid Falling Domestic Traffic

· India · LiveMint, Bloomberg, Nikkei Asia

IndiGo captured a record 67.4% of domestic passenger traffic in July, a share above all other carriers. July’s total domestic passengers fell to about 12 million, a 5% decrease from July 2025 and 11% lower than June’s 13.5 million, reflecting a sustained decline in demand. The slowdown is linked to higher jet‑fuel prices after the West Asia war and to airlines cutting or pausing unviable routes, according to a DGCA report. Air India Group remained steady at 24% while Akasa Air and SpiceJet lost market share, leaving the two largest carriers in India controlling roughly 92% of the market. Analysts say IndiGo’s jump may be temporary, pointing to its deployment of fuel‑efficient A321neo aircraft with 232 seats that add capacity over older jets.

Why it matters

The shift concentrates market power in IndiGo and Air India Group, potentially affecting flight pricing and service options for the 12‑million passengers who travel domestically each month.
