Indonesia houses 500 volcanoes, with 127 classified as active, according to the country's volcanology agency. The nation sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an active seismic and volcanic belt spanning thousands of islands. Five active volcanoes currently hold the second-highest alert status, including Mount Anak Krakatau, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, Mount Merapi, Mount Semeru, and Mount Sinabung. Recent eruptions at Mount Anak Krakatau disrupted air travel, affecting over 270,000 people and prompting temporary closures at Soekarno-Hatta airport near Jakarta. Volcanic activity in the region has previously caused severe disruptions and casualties, notably the 2018 eruption and subsequent tsunami that killed more than 400 people on Java and Sumatra.
