Inertia Enterprises finds a way to make its fusion fuel fast

Fusion startup Inertia Enterprises has reduced the time required to manufacture its fuel pellets from several days to approximately 30 minutes. The company stated that slashing the fuel filling process eliminates one of 10 major barriers needed to deliver its commercial power plant ambitions. Inertia secured $450 million from investors on the premise of commercializing technology developed at the National Ignition Facility, where fuel pellet production traditionally takes a week or more. To scale manufacturing, the startup has hired industrial engineers from companies like Apple to adapt prototypes for mass production. Each fuel pellet consists of a spherical diamond shell enclosing a frozen layer of deuterium and tritium isotopes wrapped in a gold hohlraum.
