· India · Times of India, India Today

Opposition leaders have targeted the BJP after a video surfaced in which self-styled influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj claimed that a phone call from Delhi minister Kapil Mishra helped him avoid jail after an alleged attack. Bhardwaj was accused of assaulting Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad, during a Cockroach Janta Party protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on June 23, 2026. In the video, Bhardwaj claimed he cracked the victim's skull and boasted about having the backing of political leaders including Mishra, Union minister Chirag Paswan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. News agency PTI contacted Mishra and Paswan for their response but received no reply. Delhi Police subsequently rejected claims of a fractured skull or serious injury, stating in an X post that Kumar sustained a simple head injury from a kada worn by one of the individuals involved in the scuffle.

Why it matters

The incident has sparked a political controversy over allegations of political protection for attackers, drawing scrutiny from opposition figures like Rahul Gandhi.
