This exchange follows a week of escalating military strikes between the United States and Iran, which intensified after American forces hit Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the strait on Sunday. The US military stated that the launchers were intended to deploy new sea mines into the critical shipping waterway. President Donald Trump warned that any boat placing new mines would be destroyed and threatened severe retaliation if Iran struck back.
