Iran Executes Man Over Involvement In Winter Protests

· World · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

Iranian authorities executed Shahram Sadeghi after convicting him of running over several police officers with his car during anti-government demonstrations in Karaj, west of Tehran. The judiciary stated that the executed man carried out an action supporting the US and Israel, wounding seven police officers on January 8. The protests began in late December over the high cost of living before evolving into widespread anti-government demonstrations. Iranian authorities reported more than 3,000 deaths from the unrest, attributing the violence to US and Israel-orchestrated terrorist acts, while foreign rights groups maintain that security forces fired on protesters. Executions in Iran have surged since the West Asia war began on February 28, following an execution total of at least 1,639 people last year.

Why it matters

The execution escalates domestic tensions in Iran and signals a hardline judicial response to anti-government protests amid ongoing regional conflict.
