Iran Exempts Indian, Chinese, Iraqi, Qatari Ships From Hormuz Restrictions

· World · Hindustan Times, Times of India, India Today

Iran has exempted merchant vessels from India, China, Iraq and Qatar from transit restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, allowing them to pass freely, according to Iranian lawmaker Amir Hayat-Moghaddam. The measure aims to facilitate medicine imports from India and secure political support from China, while Iran collects transit fees from Indian and Chinese ships and lets Qatari vessels pass without charges. The US is also not intercepting these vessels, Hayat-Moghaddam said. About 30% of India's crude oil imports and 90% of its LPG imports transit the strait, though crude dependence has fallen from 70% as New Delhi diversified purchases from Russia, the US, West Africa and Fujairah. The Strait of Hormuz carries almost 25% of global sea-borne oil supplies from West Asia.

Why it matters

The exemption keeps India's energy and fertiliser supply lines open through a chokepoint that handles 90% of its LPG imports and over half its LNG shipments, while also easing medicine shipments to Iran.
