Iran Fuel Tanker Explosion Kills 11 as US Tensions Escalate

· World · The Independent, Times of India

At least 11 people were killed and seven injured after a fuel tanker suffered a brake fault, struck several cars, and caught fire near a traffic police station in Sanandaj, western Iran. The state news agency IRNA reported the incident occurred late Saturday outside the Kurdish city, roughly 400 kilometres west of Tehran. The crash coincides with a sharp military escalation between Iran and the US, following mutual strikes on ships in the region. US Central Command stated it struck three Iranian oil tankers after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles at two US Navy ships. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump described the ongoing military conflict in the Middle East as a relatively minor operation.

Why it matters

The deadly domestic road accident combined with direct military exchanges between Washington and Tehran threatens vital shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz and regional stability.
