Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz if US Meets Demands

· World · The Hindu, NDTV

Iran announced it is prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if the US agrees to its terms. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated that messages are being exchanged through mediators from Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Tehran's demands include an end to the war, unfreezing Iranian assets, lifting oil sanctions, and ending port counter-blockades. Tehran has blockaded the strategic energy passage, which carries one-fifth of global oil consumption, since military hostilities began in February. US President Donald Trump responded during election rallies in Iowa, warning that Washington may use military force against Iran.

Why it matters

The Strait of Hormuz carries a fifth of global petroleum supply, and any sustained blockade directly inflates global oil prices, hitting energy imports and inflation in India.
