Iran's Khamenei Calls For Muslim Unity Against US And Israel
· World · The Hindu, Al Jazeera, The Independent
Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, in a written message on Sunday (August 30, 2026), called on Muslim countries in the region to unite against the United States and Israel, marking six months since the start of the war in West Asia. Khamenei, in power since shortly after his father Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28, has not been seen in public since his appointment, with no video or audio of him released. He urged rulers of regional countries to "recognise your real enemy, understand its plan, and confront it," referring to the US and Israel, and warned that anyone causing division among Muslims "has served the purpose of the enemies of Islam." During the war, Iran had targeted US military bases in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain, and relations with those nations have since soured. He also called on Iranian officials and citizens to put aside differences, with his remarks timed to the Shia Muslim celebration of the Prophet Mohammed's birthday.
Why it matters
The appeal signals Iran's attempt to rebuild fractured ties with Gulf states that host US bases, a shift that could reshape West Asian security dynamics and energy supply routes critical to global markets, including India's crude oil imports from the region.
