Iran's Pezeshkian Admits 'Many Problems' as US Blockade Cripples Economy

· World · Fortune, Bloomberg

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged his country's worsening economic crisis in a state media interview, conceding "we have many problems" including inflation above 80%, food staple prices up 100%, and over 1 million jobs lost by late May. The IMF projects Iran's economy will contract 6.1% in 2025, the worst decline in decades. Pezeshkian appeared to take aim at hardliners who reject US negotiations, stating that "we may even have missiles and bombs, but they are of no use." Trade intelligence firm Kpler reported Iran's August crude oil export loadings have collapsed more than 80% year-on-year following the reimposed US naval blockade. Central Command said US forces have redirected 82 commercial vessels, disabled three, and boarded two to enforce compliance in the Strait of Hormuz, eroding Tehran's leverage over the critical energy chokepoint.

Why it matters

With India heavily dependent on crude imports through the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian oil remaining a discounted source for some Indian refiners, any escalation that disrupts Gulf shipping or Iranian supply directly threatens India's energy security and fuel prices.
