Islamic Scholar Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar Says Women's Public Appearances Cause Great Destruction
· India · The Hindu, India Today
Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama president E. Sulaiman Musliar and general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar issued a circular directing that women should not share stages with men or appear in public spaces alongside them. Speaking at an Islamic conference in Kochi on Sunday, Mr. Aboobacker defended the directive by claiming that bringing women onto public platforms leads to great destruction and that Islam mandated purdah to prevent it. He stated that the Quran requires women to remain confined within their homes and make no public appearances. The circular has drawn criticism from several women political leaders in Kerala. Mr. Aboobacker maintained that Samastha leaders have taught these principles for the past 100 years to maintain women's dignity.
Why it matters
The circular and subsequent remarks ignite a fierce debate on women's rights and religious conservatism in Kerala, drawing sharp pushback from political leaders.
