Israel Advances Tender for 1,200 Housing Units in West Bank

· World · Al Jazeera, BBC News

The Israeli Ministry of Construction and Housing has issued a tender for 1,234 new housing units within the E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank. This project, which involves building over 3,400 homes on approximately 12 square kilometers of land, aims to connect East Jerusalem to the Maale Adumim settlement bloc. The Palestinian Authority's Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission condemned the move, warning that it would isolate Palestinian communities into disconnected enclaves. The bidding process is scheduled to close on October 19, shortly before Israel's general elections on October 27. Rights groups including Ir Amim and Peace Now stated that the development creates irreversible facts on the ground.

Why it matters

The E1 project is widely viewed as a major obstacle to a two-state solution, as it would effectively bisect the West Bank and sever East Jerusalem from the rest of the territory.
