Israel Election Campaign Defined by New Alliances, AI Video and Security Accusations
· World · New York Times, Bloomberg
Israel heads to the polls on Tuesday in an election widely regarded as one of the most consequential in the country's history. The campaign has been shaped by the formation of new political alliances across the right and centre-left blocs. A controversial AI-generated video circulated by a major party intensified debate over disinformation in politics. Opposition leaders have also levelled serious accusations against the government regarding security failures, particularly around the October 7 attacks. Polls indicate a tight race with no clear frontrunner, raising the prospect of prolonged coalition negotiations.
Why it matters
The outcome will determine Israel's policy direction on the Gaza war, hostage negotiations, judicial reform and relations with the US and Arab neighbours, directly affecting regional stability and India's strategic interests in West Asia.
