Israel Moves to Bar Both Main Arab Lists From October Election

Israel's Central Elections Committee has voted to bar the United Arab List, or Ra'am, and the Joint List from the upcoming October 27 election. The committee also voted separately to disqualify Hadash legislator Ofer Cassif and Balad leader Sami Abu Shehadeh. The petitions invoked Section 7A of Basic Law: The Knesset, which permits exclusions for denying Israel's status as a Jewish and democratic state, inciting racism, or supporting armed struggle. The bans are not final and require Supreme Court approval or face appeals from the affected parties and candidates. Adalah, the legal centre representing the parties, confirmed it will challenge the decisions when the Supreme Court hears the cases.
Why it matters
The disqualifications threaten the political representation of more than 1.25 million Arab voters in Israel weeks before the national poll.
