Israel Opens Bids for West Bank Settlement Project in E1 Area
· World · BBC News, The Independent, Bloomberg
Israel has opened tenders for approximately 1,200 settlement homes in the strategically sensitive E1 area east of Jerusalem. The planned development aims to divide the occupied West Bank in two and isolate East Jerusalem, which critics argue would effectively block the creation of a Palestinian state. The bidding deadline is set for 19 October, just days before Israel's general election on 27 October, designed to lock in contracts that a future government would find difficult to overturn. Settlements are considered illegal under international law, though successive Israeli governments have continued expansion. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich previously stated that the initiative is intended to erase the prospect of a Palestinian state.
Why it matters
The settlement expansion directly threatens the viability of a two-state solution by physically dividing the West Bank and isolating East Jerusalem from Palestinian territories.
