Israel Prepared to Shoot Down Hijacked Flydubai Jet
· World · India Today, NDTV, Hindustan Times
Israeli authorities were prepared to shoot down a Flydubai jet if it continued its flight path toward Tel Aviv following a cockpit stabbing attack on September 30. During the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami attacked Captain Smit Machchhar, causing the aircraft to plunge 16,000 feet. Israel scrambled fighter jets and closed its airspace after failing to establish contact with the cockpit. The crisis ended when the captain, despite being severely injured, managed to regain control and divert the plane to Saudi Arabia for an emergency landing.
Why it matters
The incident highlights the extreme security protocols triggered when an aircraft loses communication and deviates from its flight path near sensitive national targets.
