Israel puts up billboards in Mumbai to thank Captain Smit Machchhar
· World · The Hindu
The Consulate General of Israel in Mumbai has installed billboards across the city to honour Captain Smit Machchhar for saving 174 lives during a flydubai flight emergency. The billboards are located at Warden Road and Napean Sea Road junction, near the Prabodhankar Thackeray flyover on Western Express Highway in Bandra East, the BKC-Sion connector, the Andheri-Jogeshwari flyover, and Tulsi Pipeline Road near Mahim. They carry the message: 'Thank You, Captain Smit, For Saving Israeli Lives! Wishing You a Speedy Recovery.' Consul General Yaniv Revach said Captain Machchhar activated emergency alerts and opened the cockpit door despite severe wounds to his neck and hands.
Why it matters
The gesture highlights the strong people-to-people ties between India and Israel, recognising an Indian pilot's bravery in a crisis that involved Israeli citizens. It also underscores shared cultural values of preserving innocent life, as drawn by the Consul General in reference to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
