ISRO Study Reveals Rapid Melting of Himalayan Glaciers

· India · India Today, Hindustan Times

Research conducted by scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation's Space Application Centre shows that Himalayan glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate due to global warming. Glaciologist Anil V. Kulkarni and his team monitored the Samudra Tapu glacier in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul-Spiti region, finding that it has receded by more than 30 metres in two years. Measurements taken from satellite images and ground-penetrating radar reveal that the glacier has retreated by nearly 800 metres since 1960. The survey, which evaluated over 466 glaciers in the state, indicates that smaller glaciers are experiencing the most severe impacts from climate change.

Why it matters

Accelerating glacier melt in the Himalayas threatens long term water security for northern river basins and increases environmental risks across the region.
