ISRO To Expand Infrastructure With Four Launch Pads By 2029
· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, LiveMint
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan announced that India will operate four functional launch pads by 2029 to expand national space capabilities. Speaking at a graduation ceremony in Chennai on October 24, 2026, he outlined plans for a 2,000-acre dedicated Small Satellite Launch Vehicle complex at Kulasekarapattinam in Tuticorin district. The new spaceport facility will house integration buildings, launch pads, rail-track systems, and command infrastructure to meet global satellite deployment demand. Narayanan clarified that ISRO will not be privatised, though partnerships with private firms remain essential for handling commercial operations and generating high-tech jobs. He also stated that ISRO plans to conduct the first uncrewed Gaganyaan test within the next two months.
Why it matters
Expanding launch infrastructure and partnering with private firms positions India to capture a larger share of the booming global commercial satellite deployment market.
