Jadavpur University Probe Committee Set For First Meeting This Week

A probe committee set up by Jadavpur University in Kolkata to investigate the campus violence of August 20 will hold its first meeting this week, once Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya returns to duty. Bhattacharya sustained a knee injury after tripping while leaving a stakeholder meeting on Monday night and has been advised three days' rest, with his return expected on Thursday or Friday. The violence broke out after a general meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students' Union on August 19 escalated into a clash between RSS-affiliated ABVP members and Left-leaning groups, leaving several students injured. Both ABVP and SFI accused each other of bringing outsiders onto the campus, and the university's emblem was pulled down from gate number 4 during a separate scuffle with police later that day.
