Jadpur University Inquiry Panel Chief Resigns Amid RSS Opposition
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
Professor Shubha Shankar Sarkar has declined to head the inquiry panel investigating recent clashes at Jadavpur University in Kolkata. The panel was tasked with probing violence between SFI and ABVP supporters on campus. Sarkar cited personal reasons and age constraints for his resignation, stating he could not commit the time needed for regular interviews with students and staff. The Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh, an RSS-affiliated teachers' group, had objected to the panel’s composition, including Sarkar, over past legal controversies involving his removal from a teaching commission post. The RSS group also challenged the presence of Deputy Registrar Abul Hasnath, questioning his eligibility for the role.
Why it matters
The resignation complicates the investigation into campus violence, while the political pressures highlight the contentious role of university appointments under the current political climate. Further delays risk escalating tensions on campus.
