· India · The Hindu, India Today
Aegurla Mallesham of Jagtial district remains in a Dubai jail after completing his six-month prison term because he cannot pay a fine of AED 1,50,000 (approximately ₹39 lakh). His family has petitioned the Telangana government through Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s Pravasi Prajavani scheme, seeking release and repatriation. Mallesham went to Muscat, Oman, in 2018 for work and entered the UAE without a passport or visa, remaining there for nearly eight years before his arrest on March 8. A Dubai court sentenced him to six months and the fine, followed by deportation, for illegal entry and stay.
Why it matters
The case directly affects Mallesham, his wife Latha and mother Buchavva in Jagtial, while highlighting the challenges faced by migrant workers trapped in foreign legal systems due to unpaid fines after serving prison terms.
