Jailed Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Gets Parole for Funeral
· World · Times of India, ndtv
Bangladesh authorities have granted jailed Hindu rights leader Chinmoy Krishna Das a five-hour parole to attend his mother's funeral in Chattogram. Das was arrested in November 2024 on sedition charges after allegations that he disrespected the national flag, an arrest that triggered protests and communal tensions. His 70-year-old mother, Sandhya Rani Dhar, died on Thursday at a hospital in Hathazari. Das travelled to Hathazari for the funeral before returning to jail within the permitted period, according to local media reports. He currently faces six criminal cases in total, including murder charges related to the death of government prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif.
Why it matters
The case remains a flashpoint for minority rights and communal relations in Bangladesh following the political transition under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
