Jaishankar: Peace Deal of Limited Nature Between Kyiv and Moscow Would Be Positive

· World · Indian Express

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that even a limited agreement between Kyiv and Moscow would be a significant positive development in the ongoing conflict. Speaking in New Delhi, Jaishankar reiterated India's long-held stance that the war is unlikely to be resolved on the battlefield and requires direct negotiations between the parties. He also criticised peace conferences held in the absence of Russia, asserting that such gatherings serve little purpose without Moscow at the table. Jaishankar noted that India initiated its latest round of diplomatic conversations with both sides in July after commercial ships came under attack in the Black Sea. Those maritime incidents resulted in the deaths and injuries of Indian sailors, prompting New Delhi to lodge strong protests with both Ukrainian and Russian authorities.

Why it matters

The diplomatic engagement underscores India's push to secure maritime trade routes and protect Indian nationals while maintaining strategic neutrality in the Ukraine conflict.
