Jaishankar Says India-China Relations Improving After Border Standoff

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India-China ties are "better" today than they were a couple of years ago, speaking at the Asia Society in New York on September 28, 2026. He credited the improvement to the resolution of the border standoff that began in 2020, which had halted normal contacts including official exchanges, visa issuance, and flights. Jaishankar noted that while trade continued, the relationship had been severely impacted by the prolonged standoff. He emphasized that stabilizing the border was natural grounds for recovery, as both nations recognized that prolonged tension benefits third parties. The remarks came amid reports of President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to India for the BRICS Leaders Summit hosted by New Delhi. Jaishankar also warned that lack of understanding about cross-border terror concerns continues to affect bilateral ties, particularly with the United States.
