Jaishankar Slams Pakistan PM at UNGA for Normalising Terrorism
· World · Hindustan Times, LiveMint, The Hindu
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar strongly condemned Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, labelling Islamabad a serial practitioner of terrorism. Without naming Sharif, Jaishankar criticised his attempts to normalise terrorism and claim immunity from its consequences while asserting India's right to self-defence. The response followed Sharif's address, in which the Pakistan PM claimed Islamabad exercised its right of self-defence during a May 2025 military confrontation and credited United States President Donald Trump for intervening to prevent an all-out war. New Delhi has consistently maintained that the May 2025 ceasefire was reached through direct bilateral communication without third-party mediation. India exercised its Right of Reply following Sharif's remarks to challenge Pakistan's representation of facts.
Why it matters
The diplomatic clash highlights ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan at the international level, reinforcing New Delhi's firm stance against cross-border terrorism and third-party mediation.
