Jammu and Kashmir Government Staff Prepare for Annual Darbar Move

· India · Indian Express

Thousands of Jammu and Kashmir government employees have begun preparations for the annual Darbar Move, which shifts administrative offices from Srinagar to Jammu for the winter. Employees will wrap up work in Srinagar on October 30 and 31 before resuming duties in Jammu on November 2. The 150-year-old bi-annual tradition involves moving the Civil Secretariat and other administrative offices before the onset of winter. The practice was abandoned five years ago to save nearly Rs 200 crore in public expenditure before making a comeback last year. Forty-one offices, including the Chief Minister's secretariat, are moving in full, while 50 other departments will shift in camp with limited staff strength.

Why it matters

The bi-annual administrative migration impacts thousands of government employees and shifts the administrative functioning of Jammu and Kashmir between its summer and winter capitals.
