Musician Jason Isbell is leading a new class action lawsuit accusing AI music generator Suno of violating artists' rights of publicity by encoding their musical personas as tokens. Filed on Monday in the United States, the complaint alleges that Suno's system uses artist names as retrieval keys to generate matching songs, descriptions, and artwork. The lawsuit claims that typing Isbell's name produced an Americana song called Paper Bell mimicking his vocals and country twang. Isbell is joined by Camper Van Beethoven frontman David Lowery, blues singer Guy Forsyth, and jazz saxophonist Ed Calle. The plaintiffs argue that Suno's protective filters fail to block artist names when users insert spaces between letters.
