Jio Sees Room for Further Tariff Hikes, Akash Ambani Says
· Business · India Today, Moneycontrol
Akash Ambani said Jio entered the telecom market in 2016 to make data more affordable and drive India towards a data-rich economy. Speaking at an investor briefing ahead of Jio Platforms’ IPO in New Delhi on October 15, 2026, he indicated that telecom tariffs could rise further, noting there is still surplus on the table for price increases. Jio aims to shift from per-GB pricing to offering more services linked to mobile connectivity, home broadband, enterprise solutions and digital applications. The company now offers data at a much lower price than at launch, helping change how Indians use mobile internet while focusing on high-quality network performance.
Why it matters
Jio’s potential tariff hikes could increase monthly expenses for its over 400 million subscribers across India. A shift toward value-added services may alter how consumers use mobile data and digital platforms in the long term.
