John Brittas Writes to President Alleging Police Assault During Detention
· India · Indian Express
CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member John Brittas wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President, and the Chief Justice of India seeking urgent intervention and accountability after he was allegedly manhandled and assaulted in a police vehicle in Thiruvananthapuram. Brittas stated that the brutality occurred within hours of the Supreme Court issuing directions to safeguard peaceful protestors against illegal detentions and to ensure normal public services. The MP added that the assault continued even after he revealed his identity as a parliamentarian, before he was abandoned on the wayside following a release order from the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Police. The parliamentarian termed the incident an assault on democratic freedoms and the rule of law. He urged the President to seek a comprehensive report from both the Union government and the Delhi government to ensure an impartial investigation.
Why it matters
This incident raises serious questions regarding parliamentary privilege, police accountability, and the protection of democratic dissent and constitutional rights for elected representatives.
