· Sports · Sportstar, Indian Express
Eighteen-year-old judoka Khushbu Darjada won a silver medal in the women's 63kg category at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. Her achievement marks only the second judo medal won by India at the Youth Olympics and the first-ever Olympic medal secured by a member of the Siddi community, descendants of East Africans brought to Gujarat centuries ago. During the tournament, Darjada defeated Guinea's Camara Mamaissata, Morocco's Abir Bouazzaoui, and Algeria's Dounia Berrahoual before losing to Germany's Jolina Reinhold in the final. Celebrations erupted in her home village of Surva in Gujarat's Gir district following her podium finish.
Why it matters
The medal marks a historic milestone as the first Olympic podium finish for India's Siddi community and only the second Youth Olympics judo medal for the country.
