June 2025 Decision to Hold SIR Taken Unanimously, EC Tells Supreme Court
· India · Times of India, Indian Express
The Election Commission told the Supreme Court in an affidavit that the June 24, 2025 decision to conduct a nationwide SIR of electoral rolls was unanimous. Filed by deputy EC Bhanu Prakash Yeturu, the affidavit stated there was no difference of opinion among the chief election commissioner and the two election commissioners. The commission denied opposition claims that CEC Gyanesh Kumar acted unilaterally at the Modi government's behest in launching the SIR campaign. The EC added that separate letters sent by the two election commissioners to the cabinet secretary in July 2025 pertained strictly to internal administrative matters and work allocation. The commission also rejected allegations that Form 6 was amended through SIR orders, asserting that the petitions filed by Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders were based on a misleading news article.
Why it matters
The Supreme Court filing directly addresses opposition challenges to the Election Commission's integrity and neutrality regarding electoral roll revisions.
