Justice and Compassion Required for Lasting Peace in Jammu and Kashmir, Says Mirwaiz
· India · Indian Express
Valley chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addressed Friday prayers at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid, citing an International Crisis Group report on Jammu and Kashmir. He stated that while the reduction in violence is welcome, it does not mean underlying political grievances have been resolved. Mirwaiz highlighted Union Home Ministry figures showing 3,662 people were arrested under the UAPA between 2019 and 2023, while only 23 convictions were recorded during that period. He also reiterated his appeal for the review of cases concerning detained figures such as Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Shahid Ul Islam, and Engineer Rashid. The cleric emphasized that security measures alone cannot resolve a problem with deep political and human dimensions.
Why it matters
The remarks shed light on ongoing political grievances, prolonged detentions, and civic restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir, speaking directly to human rights and the pursuit of long-term peace in the region.
