Kargil Teacher Mohd Mustafa Wins National Teachers Award 2026

· India · Indian Express, NDTV, Times of India

Mohd Mustafa Kamal, a 41-year-old school teacher from Wakha village near Kargil, has been named a recipient of the National Teachers Award 2026. Growing up amid the Kargil War, Mustafa transformed abandoned military sand bunkers into a prehistoric laboratory at Government Model Middle School Grong Pashkum, where he taught classes 6 to 8 between 2021 and 2026. He also reconfigured classroom seating arrangements into a mock parliament to teach civics through experiential learning. President Droupadi Murmu will present the award to him in New Delhi today. His unconventional teaching methods have significantly increased student participation and engagement in the border region.

Why it matters

The award recognizes innovative educators in remote border regions who successfully integrate experiential learning into under-resourced classrooms.
