Karnataka approves Rs 14 crore K-Monitor to audit welfare schemes and guarantee programmes

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The Karnataka Cabinet approved Rs 14 crore for K-Monitor, a randomised field study assessing the impact of the state's flagship guarantee schemes and welfare programmes. To identify implementation gaps and measure social impact, the government led by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar will survey approximately one lakh beneficiaries and collect 60,000 responses. The exercise aims to determine whether schemes reach intended beneficiaries, identify leakages, and evaluate educational, social, and economic outcomes. The study will culminate in a report recommending corrective measures and improvements in scheme design and delivery.

Why it matters

The audit will directly affect over one lakh low-income households, women heads of families, and educated youth dependent on Karnataka's five guarantee schemes, helping ensure cash assistance and other aid reach intended recipients and improve their lives. Policymakers will use the efficiency index to compare and prioritise programmes generating greater public benefit.
