Karnataka Assembly Approves ₹2,500 Drought Aid for 5 Million Farmers

Karnataka will distribute an input subsidy of ₹2,500 each to roughly 4.6 million to 5 million farmers impacted by drought, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister G Parameshwara announced in the legislative Assembly on Thursday. The state government will allocate ₹1,250 crore for the financial assistance programme, which takes effect immediately. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has requested the Central government to release 50% of the ₹3,705.3 crore drought relief memorandum submitted earlier as interim assistance. Parameshwara stated that crop losses have affected over 40,000 hectares across the state, with 177 taluks officially declared drought affected. The administration also plans to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request that the severe dry spell be classified as a national disaster.
