Karnataka CM Shivakumar Rejects CBI Probe Into Poacher Deaths

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has dismissed demands from Tamil Nadu politicians for a CBI inquiry into the deaths of three suspected poachers in Chamarajanagar. The individuals were killed on August 15 during an encounter with the Karnataka forest department in the Cauvery Wildlife sanctuary. While Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami have sought a high-level probe, Shivakumar maintained that Karnataka must protect its territorial sanctity. State officials stated that the forest personnel returned fire in self-defence after being attacked by the group. A fourth individual is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Mysuru.

Why it matters

The incident has created a diplomatic rift between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, raising questions about border security and the management of wildlife sanctuaries.
